Free-ranging set ups have several drawbacks that how soured mosyt of us who've tried them. The most serious problem is that it makes proper misting and dripping very difficult. It also means you've got to bowl feed instead of free-ranging your prey. Giving proper lighting and UVB can also be a challenge. None of these problems are insoluble but they take a lot of work and most people conclude it's just not worth it. The successful free-range set ups usually wind up putting the trees in a large plastic wading pool or the equivalent. Then you've got to figure a way to position your lights. I'd think that a MV bulb would be preferable to this sort of set up.
I've tried it but gave up when all the misting started blistering the paint on the walls & ceiling. But it sure does look cool.
