What size prey item?

machinegun Feb 07, 2004 01:43 PM

I have a corn snake that is about 16 to 18 inches in length and about 3/8 of inch thick at the thickest part of the body. I have been feeding it two pinkies every five days and want to know if the snake is big enough to start feeding on fuzzies? Also how often should I feed fuzzies?

Thanks

Machinegun

if it can handle two pinkies no problem, it shouldn't have any problems with a fuzzy. You can feed once a week with the fuzzies.

I was about to answer when I saw your response.
I was going to suggest the same thing: once a week with a fuzzie.

A good rule of thumb for any snake, is to not feed it anything larger than the thickest part of its body. It will cause it alot of stress, especially if it starts regurgitating. Feeding it one or two fuzzies every week should not be a problem.

I see you have a corn, a ball & a red tail boa. I'm interested in other types of snakes, particularly boas & was wondering what differences you see between your corn & your boa? What do you like & not like about each? Robin

I think that the biggest difference is the size. The ball python will remain small while the boa will get to be 12 feet potentially and over 50 lbs easily. They are each great to watch but, do different things. The boa is large and so far although I have only had lucifer for a couple months is very agressive when feeding and enjoys to bask on a branch at night and hide most of the day. snake the corn is generally all over his tank during the day and sleeps at night, I have had him for 2 years and he is able to be hand fed but, I tend not to do that as that is how accidents can and will happen. The worst thing about both the snakes and really all my reptiles is that neighbors and people who don't understand them are afraid. I love them all. The boas will tend to need huge tanks compared to the corns so the cost is different, the cost of feeding is different as well. corns will eat mice and boas will eat rabbits and other large rodents so feeding live is more disgusting but, also interesting. I do stun live feed so that it doesn't hurt or attack the snakes. I doubt I covered everything but, if you have more questions just post them and I will get to them usually right away.
