need help for friend of my beardy

theLC Feb 07, 2004 02:22 PM

this is not related to bearded dragons but i thought considering this is the most active forum i would get some better feedback. this is my agama, i noticed one of these red spots a couple of months ago and thought is was just a scratch on his leg. now he has these red spots all over his belly and some on his back. they look like they're under his scales and don't look bloody just red. he's still very active and alert and seems to be healthy. any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Can you see any mites? It looks like the scales are raised, is it possible for there to be mites under them? I can't say I have seen that exact presentation before. Maybe someone else has.

Hi
yep they look like mites.
http://www.anapsid.org/mites.html

people told me to use sunflower seed oil i rub the whole animal with oil and rub it with my fingers between the scales so it whas compltely coverd with oil.
i dith it 2 times in 14 days and now it looks i not have any mite left.
i also cleaned the cage with 10%bleach in water and put him on a papersheat instead of sand also cleaned his rock with 10% bleach solution in water and rinsed it wel after it with 3 times fresh water witout bleach.

i know the oil treathment i dith can be harmful i have heard that to becuase the oil can choke the skin and then reptile.
it worked for me very wel.
i would read the link i gave you it wil help you to.
if the dots r red then you have mites for shure.

hey,
you could always bring him to the vet! they would know what it was for sure, and what to do.. but, that may be expensive.. my cats got my lizard and it was 160$ for everything, but they did alot of work!

Alot of wc lizards have them. Usually they are treated before you purschase.

I have had wc collareds lizards with them. This particular mite is NOT as bad as the snake mite(little black buggers)

These parasites fill with blood and turn red. Easy way to eliminate them is with cooking oil

Just smear cooking oil all over the area where they are. They will sufficate.

That is an immediate type thing you can do if you don't have anything else available.

I have invested in a bottle of reptile relief, works great and is non toxic to you lizards.

Here another site to look at.

hey thanks everybody, they are mites. i was able to pull one out and saw him wiggle a bit. i checked my other lizards and they have em too but really reallllllllly tiny ones, i had to stare for 5 minutes just to finally see one. so can i just treat the animals and cages or do i need to treat my whole house too? do these things spread like fleas do thru your carpet or just die off if they have nothing to feed on? my skin is crawling thinking about it, i'm all freaked out thinking they could be everywhere now. i'd never know if they were, u can't hardly see the dang things. thanks again for the quick responses, this forum rocks!

When you say now you are finding more and they are really tiny, are they blackish, like pepper, that moves? Or red/ orange?

Did you just get a wc lizard? Did you put it near others you had? Or are they all new?

You have to treat everybody and your tanks as well, any place they have been, could be eggs !

I would invest in a mite killer if you have that many.
Some like, provent a mite, you can look it up and read for yourself.

I like reptile relief its so much safer. Will not harm your lizards in any way ! You can look that up also, make up your mind which is better for you.

But ya have to do something if they have that many and you are having them crawl on you. As quickly as you can.

Let us know if you are seeing just the orangey ones.

yeah, they're just the reddish orange ones, are those just bad or really bad compared to the black ones? i've since separated everyone in sterile enclosures and now i'm in the process of breaking everything down. my girlfriend has some lizards at her place and she's breaking everything down to be cleaned as well. i rather be on the safe side. i'm just worried these things are gonna get in my carpet or some crevice in my house and breed. do they attack humans too? should i get a flea powder for my carpet?
