Am I doing this right? K. Baurii (Three-lined muds)

snakelady Feb 07, 2004 02:31 PM

Wellp, I am hooked on these little guys now... Got a duet nearly 6 months ago and so far I think they're thriving... But it never hurts to ask and bounce off people's thoughts or suggestions. These guys are little, hatchlings, and utterly adorable. I'm feeding them on a regiment of different live insects (wax, night crawlers, occasional mealies, crix), fish (roseys and small golds), snails (ramshorn spawn and young ramshorn babies), and different commercial turtle chows (reptomin mainly). I try to keep it varied, and offer greens every so often (attached to the tank's side with a clip so the edges dangle in the water, seems a bit more attractive to them). Far as the tank goes they're in a 20g long tank, natural-looking gravel on the bottom and built up in some corners for them to come out. I have several rocks, some angled underwater and some edging out of the water (they seem to like to hide under these angled ones). The waters kept about the mid 70s /- (high-action filter as well, gives a slight current to the water). Is there anything else I SHOULD be offering these little darlings for food or for habitat? And is there anywhere that I can get more at a good price for a number of kiddos? I'm mostly a snake person but these little muds are so fascinating and personable with their antics.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like everything you are doing is correct. You should be seeing some decent growth on them.
They are great little turtles and very long lived too.
One thing though......are your snails of aqaurium origin or wild collected? I have heard, but do not know for sure, that aquatic snails are vectors for parasites.

Sounds good to me. How deep is the water you're using? What's the temp of the basking spot?

Here's a picture of the new female striped muds I just got...this puts my adult group at 1.2...and I'm sure I'm not done yet. :P
