Brumation and eating sand.

MECH220 Feb 07, 2004 03:35 PM

I am trying to prepare my lizard for brumation and have had him off food for about a week and a half. I would like to cool him down soon. My problem is that I have read recommendations that a lizards digestive system needs to be empty or they could die, and my lizard is eating and passing sand as droppings. These droppings have the typical white part as well.

Will the sand threaten his life if he brumates with it in his system, or is he trying to tell me he does not want to brumate?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Mech,

Alot of them will occasionally lick sand, and more than likely do pass it. The normal white, is the urates part, or liquid, so to speak.

I think he will be okay, to brumate.

If you feel uncomfortable, in any way, just get rid of the sand, until hes done brumating.

But most brumate them on slightly dampened, sand, (slightly) and they are fine.

Better decide soon, LOL, because SPRING will be here, many will be breeding in March and April Or you can always try next year !

Thanks for the help eve. I think I will brumate him anyway. I would be concerned about the timing but he is all alone and won't know that it is mating time soon anyway.

I'm sure he wishes he had a girlfriend but I can't find a store or breeder in my area.

Thanks again,

....you plan on breeding him this spring, there is NO real 'requirement' to brumate him at all, at the moment. Since you don't have a female anyway, you may wish to avoid the small risk involved with brumation by just skipping it this time.
