Problem with mealworms

bigdee Feb 07, 2004 03:49 PM

I had about 10-15 beetles in a container until they died now that the baby mealies are large enough to see it seems like its not many. I hear the beetles lay about 500 eggs but it doesnt seem even close to 100 babies, why am I not getting alot of babies? I now have another setup of mealies and now have over 10 aliens seperated with more turning to aliens on a regular, if the beetles lay 500 eggs shouldnt I be getting 1000's of babies?

I have heard that some places cause the mealworms to be non-reproductive, but I don't know how much to trust this. You may try another supplier if you really want to breed your own. You would think that breeding insects would not be that hard, but I experienced the same frustrations you are having. I gave up, so I hope things go better for you.

What is the room temperature where they are kept? How often do you rotate the adults? If you don't rotate the beetles every 10-14 days they could be eating the larva.
