Suprise! Eggs!

bobsmom Feb 07, 2004 04:04 PM

My turtle Bob is apparently female as she laid an egg last night. She has been in my care and apart from other turtles for over 9 years so I'm sure it's unfertilized. She is acting normal and her appetite is fine, but I'm wondering if there will be more eggs and if I should do something differently while this is going on. Does she need sand even if the eggs aren't fertilized?

I think I read that turtles need somewhere out of water to lay eggs (that's why I'm hoping I have a boy) because it's not healthy for them to lay in water. She'll need somewhere to lay them and you will have to remove them. You will probably have to make a permanent change to her enclosure for laying those eggs. I'm sure someone on this list (so many helpful people) can give advice on how to put together a "nesting box" of some kind. Congrats though... your turtle is now a "woman"!!
