I'm looking to get a pair of loggerheads. Can you keep a pair in a 40 gallon breeder for the winter? I would provide an outdoor pond in warm months.
Loggerheads can sometimes be kept as pairs but more often not - in that case one may die or be seriously stressed at the least. This also goes for same-sex pairs of the species....better keep them separate.

They can be kept together, but you have to make sure that they don't fight with each other.
Here's a picture of the pair together...the male is on the right.
