RoboticLizard Jun 08, 2003 10:08 AM

I used to feed him crix, than I switched to meal worms, and it was fine for a while, then he stopped eating. I went back to crix again, but he still won't eat. He drinks and acts normally, but nomatter what, he won't eat. Please help!

Instead of giving him one type of bug, and sometime switching, try giving him different bugs with every meal, or switch every feeding. He is probably just getting sick of the same thing, chams are usually really fussy. To get him to eat again, try offering a new type of bug he hasn't tried, like a waxworm, butter worm, or silkworm.
Also, if he eats too many mealies, he may get constipated. some say no more than 1-2 a week. I give my panther 1-2 every few days, and haven't had a problem yet. I wouldn't go more than that though. They are hard to digest. That could also by why he isn't eating. I know I'm not as hungry if I have to poop~ lol.
Give him a few more days, it is probably just something simple. Look at your set up (including anything outside of the cage, not just inside) and see if anything has changed in the last 2-3 weeks. It could be stress related.
If you can't figure it out in the next week or so, I would get him checked by a vet. It may be that he is sick. you can check his mouth for mouthrot (stringy saliva and a green/black colour) and listen for a respiratory infection (sounds like rice krispies). If you suspect one of these go to a vet ASAP. If spotted soon enough they are fixable, but left too long and the cham may need a lot of work to get better.
If none of this stuff sounds like what the problem is, I'm sure there are lots of other ideas from the more experienced keepers. Keep us posted! Good luck!

7 days is a long time. Try www.mulberry.com and but a cup of hornworms they are bright green and chams love them. If your cham is small only get one cup and you may have to separate the worms from their food and give them small amounts at a time because they can grow to 4 inches in less than 10 days and they may get too big for your cham to eat. Silkworms are great too.
If he still does not eat you may have to force feed him. Try a product called Repta-aid by Fluker (use the one for carnivors) It's easy to use and nutritious and will make your life a whole lot easier.

My guy hasn't eaten on his own since March!
I've tried LOTS of different things...bug juice, forcing him to eat crix and mealies...nothing has worked.
So...now he is fed Flukers Repta-aide, by syringe, every day.
That's just the way it is for us now. I still offer him bugs, but not daily anymore. Hopefully he'll eat on his own again one day...but, I'm not counting on it.
That's how he drinks his water too.
I'm sure with your guy, it's just a temporary thing, and if you shake up his diet, he'll probably start eating on his own again soon.
Sonia is right though, just to be on the safe side, you should probably have him checked out by a vet....Zoe's "hunger strike" began with a respiratory infection...and he hasn't eaten by himself since.

Good luck to you and your cham...

chimbakka, you were right, I looked and there wasn't and poop on the bottom of his tank, and when he did poop, it was very small. He is eating now(about 1 more every day) and he just started shedding(he never seems to eat much when he is about to shed anyway). Thanks.
