Hey Me and my wife a from Haleyville, AL

its good to know that there are other tortoise lovers in Alabama
we have a 5 month old sulcata tortise named sully. Plus 2 water dragons:china and Jackie Chan. plus various rodents.

DaviDC. Feb 08, 2004 06:55 PM

With my grandfather bringing me box turtles he'd find in the road after a rain shower. I'd keep them for a while then take them to the country & let them go when I went to visit my grandparents.

weecritters Feb 08, 2004 08:38 PM

well for me it was, when I was younger there were 2 baby turtles found near my home, 1 my dad found, the other was found by my uncle who lived next to us, my dad of couse gave me the one he found, while my uncle gave the one he found to his son, well my cousin got tired of his and gave it to me a week later, kept them both for about 6 months then let them go. I made a promise that day that I would have another turtle if not a tortoise. At almost 30 years old I kept it.

SalS Feb 09, 2004 07:11 PM

I have a sulcata and redfoot tortoise. Also a few other chelonidans, snakes, lizards, and frogs.

Hey, neighbor! I'm in Santa Rosa. Should be having some nice weather the next few days. Moxie was outside for about an hour today, and got in some good roaming exercise!

I thought you might be from Santa Rosa! My mom and dad live in Sebastopol. Small world! It's nice to meet someone online that is so close to home.

Sohni Feb 08, 2004 11:33 AM

We're hoping to move to Sebastopol and have a couple acres eventually, when we have big bucks (lol). My kids go to school there, so I do a lot of driving back and forth.

Yeah I know what you mean. The price for houses there are just ridiculous! We thought about moving there near my parents but it was just way out of our price range. Then my husband got a teaching job here in Ukiah so that settled things...plus I was born and raised here anyway. It is a good town to raise young children in.

The best thing about So. Cal. is it has a great climate for tortoises. Otherwise, well...

Lower Alabama.

tortoisehead Feb 09, 2004 02:52 AM

I really can't argue with you. It has become way too congested here, and the people do tend to be kind of phony. I like the bumper sticker that was popular here a few years ago. "Welcome to California, now go home."

Where I am, close to the coast, it is a bit humid for many species of desert-type tortoises. Some can adapt, but others, like the golden Greek, have a tough time of it. It would be just right for redfoots, but I have never had one. Inland, it is just about perfect for most tortoises.

Sohni Feb 09, 2004 07:13 PM

Sad to say, it's getting congested everywhere. When we first moved here in '83, it was much more rural than it is now. The county itself is still pretty rural, but every year the city encroaches just a little more.

Oh-Oh, I have started a so. cal VS. No Cal war! LOL
Actualy, I did mean Los angeles, not Louisiana. (although, Louisiana would be one of the few places with more white trash than No. california--just joking--no hate posts ok?)I grew in LA and their is where all my friends and family are. My poor Galops are freezing their carapaces off in this Nor Cal winter. When it rains here, which is all the time, it is 75'f in LA. I have a job here, but I will move back to la la land soon. Again, nothing wrong with No. California, just not so outdoor tortoise friendly in the winter.

Sohni Feb 08, 2004 10:22 PM

Gasp, choke...you actually want to move BACK to LA? I gotta tell you, my husband was born in Glendale, grew up in the Valley, and left as soon as he could. He'd never go back at all if my (misguided) sister didn't live down there.

The one and only. The place with the near-perfect weather. The place everyone wants to live. And that is what makes it sometimes a living Hell! It takes you an hour to drive 15 miles on the freeway on some days, and those days are getting more and more common!
