Is It A illness?

I have a large male vieled chameleon. His crest looks like the color has faded. Could this be a calcium problem or something else?

The obvious suggestion is that he's getting ready to shed. But as long as the casque is still sturdy & everything else seems OK, I would get too stressed over it.
