a ? of protien in diet

beardiedragon Feb 07, 2004 07:42 PM

my understanding was that a Rhino's diet should consist of fruit and veggies. An occational protien treat (crix, worms...) would be ok. Is this correct? what about meat? I have seen several people regularly feeding their Rhino's rats and mice. That can't be good for them, can it?

they did that at the place where i got my cuban. they fed him a pinky every day along with his greens, fruit and veggies. since he has been with me the only protein he has gotten has been plant protein and the occasional adult iguana pellet food.

Hi, I recently added a cyclura page to my site at www.reptilecare.com. I have my opinion on diet there. I will try and put the link here but if it doesnt work it is http://www.reptilecare.com/cyclura.htm

I think we should be erring on the side of caution with animal protein. My female rhino that has recently begun to live part of her time in our living room will, on occasion find the odd piece of dry dog food in the kitchen if we are not careful. Basically this is all the animal protein she receives. This would not even measure up to 1% of the diet. Again, very occasionally I might throw her one superworm. A VERY insignificant portion of her diet.

Carole

PS any and all comments are welcome regarding the content on my cyclura page there.

Yes, with all the myriad suggestions for feeding Cyclura, It can leave one's brain Spongiform-like having Mad Cow Disease!

Carole's post and picture was appreciated.

Just Yesterday alone, on this subject I heard three different opinions:

A). "100% herbivore DO NOT feed any animal matter!"

B). "On protein, use a small amount of low-fat (For older dogs) dry dog food.

....

Half the message didn't post somehow.

B). "3-5% depending on age (Young-the latter) should be fed moistened dry dog food for older dogs and ~65% should be high Calcium greens. ~25% should be frozen mixed veggies, 5% fruit"

C). Adults AND Juveniles should have 40% protein in the diet. This is to consist of insects and cooked turkey meat"

We would tend to agree with Carole's suggestion. I personally handfed Juveniles an occasional cricket but otherwise fed them a Green Iquana diet. If one does not have an old dog, I would tend to reccommmend the turkey meat supplement (~3% of the diet). It can be processed, made into patties, and frozen for future use.

Sincerely,
Brian
