My beardie

reptile_dude Feb 07, 2004 08:20 PM

Just wanted to post a little bit about my beardie. His name is Stubs, and he was given this name by my 3 year old son and it is very appropriate for him and i will tell you why. He is missing half his tail, half of his back right leg, and numerous toes on his feet. I rescued him from a friend of a friend of mines collection, as he was the smallest and therefore most picked on, and she was pretty sure he would not make it. He is now a wonderful part of the family. Very healthy eater and after he eats he loooves to make the living room smell like roses (yea right)!! He has a big ole log in his cage that he sits on to bask in his heat lamp and watch television. He gets angry when it is turned off and will stare at you till you turn it back on. He is getting too big for the log that is in his tank, but well after it being out for less than half a day and him moping around we put it back...he knows that he won that battle!! He has so much personality and my son loves him!!

I, too, have a gimpy beardie.

I originally acquired her back in October from a pet store that I used to frequent. I was admiring the big beardies they had in one of their front cages, when the store owner told me he had one for free. I thought he was kidding - but, there she was.

Her front left foot was in the process of dying - so it was all black and mummified. Then, on her front right hand, she was missing quite a few toes, but still had one claw. The owner told me that she had been dropped off, and he was just finishing up rehabilitating her - and was planning on giving her away. Just waiting for the right owner.

Well, I have always said that the pet will choose the owner. So, Lazlo is now part of my family. I like to take her out of her terrarium and watch her run. It's amazing how they adjust. She isn't the most graceful climber, but she makes do and loves her log.

I fear she will never be very big. She's grown quite a bit since I got her last fall, but her growing seems to have slowed quite a bit. Certainly not from a lack of eating!!! She can really put them away - crickets. She doesn't like to eat her greens, though. I've spoiled her. She knows every night she will get her dose of crickets, so she will pick out her favorite items from her veggie dish and leave the rest. I'm still working with her, trying different techniques, in order for her to eat her veggies. She's like a picky kid.....

But, like you, I am so glad that I have her.

What was that line from Seabiscuit - "You wouldn't throw away a life just because it had a defect, now would you?"

Or something like that.
