Perlite in humid hides, anyone done this?

shuler06 Feb 07, 2004 08:20 PM

Just pondering the thought, is perlite good for humid hides and egg laying containers? Its about the only thing around here I can find. I have to send off for moss or vermiculite. Of course I may not be looking in the right places, so that information too would be helpful.

Also Marcia, you said you nuke your vermiculite every couple of days? What bacteria have you heard of growing in it?

Thanks for the help,

Tim

I wouldnt use perlite for humid hides simply because they are rough on the edges, and I think accidental consumption of perlite would be abrasive to the inner lining of a geckos intestine. You could use perlite in egg containers. There are many stores which sell sphagnum moss, you can try Kmart's Garden center, home depot's or any local florists. They also sell shagnum moss that is sterilized so you wont have to worry about "baking" soil which often smells like dookie. hahaha

I did try wally Robin, but there were so many bags of stuff I just read down the tags and not the actual bags, so I probably missed it. I will look again. How long do u cook it Robin? I mean I know its not long, like 30 sec? Thanks for the other suggestions, maybe I'll make 2 each of moss, vermiculite, and bed-a-beast, and see what is the prefered medium. I know they like vermiculite, but I have also begun to see it in their stools. I have plenty of miner all I in their enclosures and no food can get into their humid hide because the hole is on the top, and that would have to be a mighty strong mealworm to get out of the glass food bowl first, and then up the side of the humid hide. If a mealie can do that i'll put a cape on him. Anyway, I guess they just like the vermiculite, i can think of no other reason. Good point about the perlite Wahberee, I should have thought of that, but thats why I have you people on here

Thanks again,

Tim
