Shedding & appetite

katdd Feb 07, 2004 09:06 PM

We are new to Leopard geckos. We have had it (Malakai Jo) only a week and it's shedding. Which I guess is normal. Is it normal for them not to eat anything while they are in the process of shedding? How long does it take and when do we worry if not all of the skin comes off the toes. I know it has to but I just don't know how long it takes. One more question Malakai Jo is about the size of your middle finger any guess to his age? We have no idea. The pet store couldn't tell us. Thanks for any info you can give us.

Well mine hasnt shedded yet and i am new to them too but for the shedding of the toes. If it all doesnt come off i read awhile back in the forums that you should use a wet cotton swab to get all the excess shedding off of the gecko if it cant get it on itself in like 3 weeks. and i am guessing that it is normal for it not to eat because the gecko will actually eat the shedded skin.

Hmm... well that all depends on the size of your hand I guess, I have small hands so a gecko the size of my middle finger would be a hatchling just a week or two old. Petstore geckos usually tend to look smaller than their age but once they're bought and settle in they grow like weeds. I guess you can say once he reaches 8-9 inches then he's a year old to give you a rough estimate.

As for shedding I think it only takes a day or two. I've never seen my gecko shed but I know he's shed a couple times already since his color changes dramatically sometimes (gets super bright) and he's also grown quite a bit. And yes, they don't seem to have much an appetite when they're shedding.
