Ear Absess on Baby RES

cscreate Feb 07, 2004 10:03 PM

It is getting bigger. Now, the size of a pea. It is just under the ear. Does anyone have knowledge about the draining of an aquatic turtle absess?

Any special care needed? separate tank or keep it dry or clean it out and that is it?

Please help. I have never had an aquatic turtle get anything like this before.

You will need to have a vet intervene. You should not attempt
this procedure yourself. It will need to to opened up and the
infection removed. The vet will give you directions on care
from there. Just make sure you find a vet that has experience
with reptiles. Many year ago one of my adult turtles developed
an ear abcess and my vet put him under to lance and clean
it up. I am happy to say that I have never had this problem
again with any of my turtles. I have 4 aquatic and 1 tortoise.
Please do not wait as this will only worse.

Keep the babies temps adequate and good luck

I once caught a wild adult box turtle with an abcess about 3/4 the size of its head. So apparently if you leave it, it will only get bigger.

Thank you for the responses.
The absess is still the size of a pea. I will go ahead and plan for a vet to intervene.

It really must be treated by a vet. It is not a process that someone with no experience can handle doing. Plus he will need antibiotics after the procedure as well.
