Black Rat Snakes are found in many types of ecosystems. I have found them in pine forests, swamps, fields and on rocky hillsides. They like to climb, and I have found them living in hollow places in trees. I am sure that you can get more info on where they can be found from the state herpetological society.

If you are looking to take one from the wild, there is no need. You can get captive bred individuals this summer when the eggs start to hatch. It makes no sense to deplete the wild populations when you can get a snakes that was bread for the pet trade for so very little money.

Taking one or two animals will not be detrimental to the wild population. As long as a person isn't looking to collect for resale, and abides by whatever state law(s) may exist, it's really not a problem. If nothing else, he'll be getting some work in the field, which can only be beneficial.

but am not sure of the exact ordinances. Check w/ Dept. of Natural Resources - the fines can be ridiculous.

every Thing I have read said that black rat snakes are not protected in NY. also I just wanted to see one in the wild b/c it is a species in NY that I have never seen in the wild and I would like to see all the native snakes in NY for my life list.

Wayne, we use to come across them frequently in many parts of NY State. I am not aware of where you are located but a few places within 2 hours of NYC would include the Ellenville and Mountaindale area as well as most of the Bear Mountain State Park area. If you do plan on collecting a few I would strongly suggest finding out if you are permitted to. There was a time when they were frequently encountered with the areas of the known densites of rattlers but most of those dens I hear have been vandilized and for the most part destroyed.

Goodluck in your search as seeing herps in the wild is a SIGHT to see but one that is becomming rarer every day. Keep us posted on your progress and feel free to e-mail me any pics of your sucess.
