Superworms for Baby WDs?

cancerrr Feb 08, 2004 04:06 AM

My WD is almost 3 months old. So far Ive only given him 2 super worms. First I planned on only feeding superworms once a week. Instead I gave him the second superworm 2 days later. That was yesterday. Im wondering if I can feed him one today or if that would be too much. He has crickets in the cage, but he really enjoys the worms. So, how often should I feed them to him? What other foods are good for him at his age?

(Im just saying "him" though I have no idea what sex it is. Hope it's a male.)

At his age feed him as often as he'll eat, the more you feed the more he'll grow. Obesity is only a problem once they are full grown. You could also try waxworms, red/leafworms(bait store)and as he gets larger you can also try nightcrawlers.

I read somewhere that if he is fed too much, and grows too fast, that he will develop mbd. That's why I was being cautious. So, is it ok to feed him one superworm a day, or more even?

I've never read that, MBD is a condition caused buy lack of natural sunlight. That is why we as keepers need to provide our dragons with a good vit./min. supplement as well as tubes and bulbs which emit uva/uvb lightwaves. This combination allows the dragons to metabolize vit.D3, which is naturaly gained through exposure to sunlight. Vit. D3 is necessary for proper bone growth in conjuntion with calcium supplementation. At that age don't limit his food intake, nature doesn't. In the wild hes gonna eat anything that moves and will fit in his mouth, provided he has room in his belly.

You can't overfeed a baby waterdragon, MBD is caused by a lack of calcium and UVB lighting. Superworms are a good food source, he may be big enough for a pinky mouse soon, or worms like the other poster suggested. Mine also loved rosy minnows when they were that age.

MBD is most likely to occur during the first two years while they are growing fast. The solution is not try and slow down their growth, but to make sure that they are getting a good diet and are properly supplimented with Calcium/D3. Attempting to slow down their growth will only increase the chances of a calcium imbalance.

thnx for the help. I tried feeding him/her the worm right after I read the replies, but he didnt want it anyway. It is still better for me to know though. From now on I know that if he's hungry, he'll eat it. If he's not, he wont. It doesnt matter how large the quantity is.
