Set-up question

coolcritter Feb 08, 2004 07:11 AM

I am sure you guy's/gals have answered this a million times but how about a million and one, LOL

Thanks.

I am building cages for my BRB's.
Will a 2x2x3w be big enough for them ?
Also I am a big fan of pro-pruducts heat panels.

My lowest cage toward the floor will have temps around 70deg. and The heat panel will be a 12x12 40 watt panel or I have some 75 watt and 100 watt panels I could use. What do you think about the size of panels ? ( I would rather use the bigger panels because I do not have any other use for them )and what should the coolest part of the cage be and the warmest spot be ?
And can I house more than one animal per cage or is it better to house them seperate ?
Also What is the best type of substraight to use ?
If you do respond please keep a eye on this subject when you return to the forums, incase I have further questions, I have had this happen with other forums were people asnswer you and then more questions are asked to stay in the topic but then it dies in the bottom of the pile. LOL
or you can e-mail me so that we can work out my set-up.
thanks

Jim,
. 2x2x3 will be large enough but 2x2x4 would be better. I keep my adult BRBs 2 snakes per cage in 36 and 48 inch cages. If you are using wood to make your cage you will have to do lots and lots of sanding and apply multiple coats of a waterproof finish to keep the wood from soaking up water and rotting. I would use whatever het panels you have available but you will need to control them with a thermostat and or rheostat. If your snake room stays at the same temperature all the time you can probably get by with just a cheap rheostat to control the temperature. If the room temperature changes more than a few degrees you will need a thermostat to control the cage temperature. I use thermostats in series with rheostats to control the temperature and provide some safety if the thermostat were to fail in the full power mode. For BRBs you will need one end of the cage in the low 70s and the other end of the cage in the low 80s. The longer the cage is the more room the snake has to find the temperature that it wants. I use newspaper substrate and keep it slightly damp much of the time. There are many other substrates hich look nicer than newspaper. BRBs produce more liquid urine than most other snakes and so there cages have to be cleaned often. Damp substrate will also mold or mildew so whatever substrate you choose consider that it needs to be changed often.

Thanks Guy's I should have said I build PVC cages I built the cage allready, but I got caried away with the perches I think. I use Mulch for all my Arboreals, would this not be a good Idea ? Right now my BRB'S are in 36 in tubs that are only 6 inches tall with news paper substrate.
I will post a picture when I am done.
I also have high dollar temp. sensors also.

I plan to build mine out of the PVC with a top that comes off for easy access so I would need a size comparison.
Do they need at least a 16x16 4 inches tall or can I get away with 12x12 or 14x14.
