cricket watering products

clp Feb 08, 2004 09:07 AM

Hello

I found a product at my local home supply store that is made for long term slow release of water into the soil for plants...
It's a producat that sswells greatly when mixed with water, looks like the cricket watering bites that one can buy. The chemical make up is very close to the cricket watering products but cost much much much less...... a small amount of the product makes a large amount of gel....
Does any one have any experience with the product sold for plants?
the product i have now is soil moist... their web site is at www.soilmoist.com

any feedback would be great...

thanks

I would stay away from any "acrylic" containing product. Why don't try using the agar agar recipe that is everywhere on the net for watering gel? I use it all the time and it is much cheaper than the store bought brand and easy to make.

You can buy agar agar at any health food store and the packages have a recipe for making it in the back side. I buy the packages here in PA for $5.00 a package and it makes about 4 large container of cricket total bites worth (I reused a container of the cricket bites for my storage).

also if you are not able to find agar agar easily you could check WormMan.com and look at thier cricket crystals. Its like $9.40 for an amount that will hold a gallon of water.

I've just used the agar agar stuff tho.

I don't know about the cystals you can use for plants. I have used them before, but for plants only.

For my roaches and other insects, I make them Moisture Munchies, which is just water and pure agar agar. Below is a link to my website and the recipe to make your own agar agar. The great thing is you can eat the stuff too...so it can't be bad. You might need to adjust the water amount per the agar agar, but the stuff is great. I buy my stuff from the Chinese store and costs me about 79 cents for a package that makes me two batches of Moisture Munchies.

A package of agar agar that costs the same as 2 oranges lasts me alot longer than 2 oranges without having to deal with spoiling fruit. Better to me...

what vitamins are in agar agar?

Mothi Feb 09, 2004 09:06 PM

>>what vitamins are in agar agar?

Never said there was any. I use them to provide moisture...never said to provide vitamins. I give my insects a dry diet that I make with a variety of ingrediets and offer the occasional fruit piece of vege piece if I have spare. But when it comes to providing a moisture source, nothing beats the convience of agar agar....to me. Check the USDA if you want to know what is exactly the nutritional make up of agar. It's like asking, does water have any vitamins??? A moisture source is one thing, but it's nice fruits/veges have bonus nutrition, but I leave that up to my other diet to fill in and not the primary moisture source I provide daily.

I have not been able to get my roaches to eat oranges or bananas. I'm tired of removing spoiled fruit. The only thing they have eaten so far are apples, squash, and carrots.

Me too! So I rarely give fruit. I give them greens each night and I have a gallon jar lid with a green scrub pad (the sort that is about 1/4 inch thick and NON soaped) cut it to fit in the lid and keep it wet down. Every week or so you knock the crud out of it and every couple months you can just throw it away and go with a new one. I get them by the 3-6 packs at the dollar store. No smell, no rot.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.
