IGUANA RAN AWAY!

svinarsk Feb 08, 2004 01:42 PM

My ig was in his enclosure which is unescapable and I came home last night and didnt see him in it. I proceeded to look through the whole house. Sad thing is, His enclosure is in the basement (furnished), but the doors were open to theother rooms in the basement so he could have gone anywhere. I just hope he didnt go in the storage room cause that will make finding him more than a chore. Im really upset. Are iguanas that good at escaping? Where could he have gone? Wouldnt they naturally climb up?

When my little iguana escaped from the bathroom after her swim she made her way into the closet. She was hidding in a small area behind a bunch of boxes on the floor. They will try to get themselves into the smallest holes they can find to try to be safe. They seem to explore every area and if something scares them they just try to hide and wait. I was able to find mine because I heard something scratching on cardboard. The cat was acting weird and looking around in the closet. I just kept listening until I found where it was coming from. Cats are good helpers when looking for iguanas because they will chase any noise until they find out what it is. You just have to be there before the cat actually finds the iguana. I hope you find you iggy. I read this and it helped a little.

Will he stay at his hiding spot until he dies? Or will he leave this spot and go explore for another one...

He will probably explore some more when he feels safe to move. They are stubborn though and will remain in a spot for quite a while even if it is cold and uncomfortable. Did you check out the web address for lost igs? I changed the way I was looking for mine after I read it. Look in sections at a time instead of going one spot to another. Also look extreamly well even if you don't think he will fit there. Good luck.

I agree with Sam-n-Ella. Listening is sometimes the best way to find something. Maybe even turn all the lights out completely and sit in the dark and listen. Flashlight might help. I know when my step son's hamster got out, we found him by listening. Sure enough, we found him right away chewing at the dog food bag in our out kitchen. Now, I know iguanas are no hamsters, but they still make a lot of noise moving around. Good luck!

Any luck finding your iggy? Mine was gone for 2 days. Did you find out how he got out? Hope you find him soon, good luck.

Well... After two days of vigorous searching. I have come up empty handed.

If my iggy isnt found within a week, I am adopting. Hopefully my Miles will be found but if not let God have mercy on his soul. It is 0 degrees outside. So most likely he will freeze in the small nooks and crannies of my basement walls.

Is there anything else I can do? Ive even tried setting out treats for him in all corners of the room. None were touched.

Maybe a local rescue might have some insights. Heck, if you're in the general area, I can come help you look.

I'm sure you will find him. Check in every tiny spot one room at a time. Do you know anyone with a cat? My cat helped me find my ig. They have real good hearing and can sense something move from anywhere in the room. Just be sure you are near the cat when it starts following something it hears or senses. Start with the closest room first because most of the times they will get spooked before they get to the next room and have already hidden. I had to carefully move about 8 boxes to get to my ig. I didn't have any luck with putting out treats. I don't think they can smell that far to be able to find a treat. They might come across it while exploring. If you get another ig in a week just be prepared for having 2 because he will probably show up after you get another one. How big is he? If I remember right he is just a little guy. That makes it harder to find, but I think it would be more curious and want to explore more. Good luck in finding him.

I am sure you will find it... though if its just a baby then youll just have to look harder! They really love to climb so anything that hangs down to the floor would be a good start like curtains or drapes. If its really cold then that presents a problem b/c he will not be as active which means he may hardly move around at all. If he is fotunate enough to find a heat source however... me may stay near that. What I would do is set up a lamp or 1 light source in the room in hopes he will venture over to it.
