Fecies Question.... a lil concerned..

oogieboogie Feb 08, 2004 02:45 PM

Hey, woke up this morning and found this lovely surprise in my BD's cage. Definetly thinking it is not normal. It is runny and really smelly.

He gets fed a regular diet of greens and carrots. I dont feed them to many crickets, they get them once or twice a week as a treat.

Forgot my question, although its pretty obvious haha

Why would it be that color/runny/smelly? Im guessing I should go get a fecal done?

You got it fecal asap.

It could also just be undigested food, has the basking temp been changed recently?

oogieboogie Feb 08, 2004 03:15 PM

Yup thats what i figured! *lol*

Ummm not since he has moved into his new cage. But his fecies has been pretty runny since then, and every now and then it smells horrible. I probably should have gotten him in sooner.

Im gonna call tm and make an app. But just wanted to post to see if anyone could give me some insight as to what might cause it. Diseases? Bacteria? etc etc....

For sure take him in.

It is a possible digestion problem. Was the basking temp higher in the previous cage? If so he may not be digesting veggies properly and it could be causing him to expel excess water.

It certainly does look like undigested food. Would have said it was regurgitated if I didn't then spot the urate. The orange is most likely carrots, either just the dye left or undigested. What are all those pellets? Probably not a good ideal to house a dragon on those due to the fact they absorb moisture and can get mouldy and allow bacteria buildup.

Also, how old is your dragon> What is the basking temp? It should be around 95-115F, the higher end for young dragons. Also, it is good to feed some sort of insect food (silkworms, roaches, crickets, hornworms) at least 2-3 times a week for an adult dragon, once or more a day for younger dragons. (the younger he is, the more feedings of insects should be offered per day).

A fecal certainly wouldn't hurt, and since you did say it was quite smelly, it could indicate a parasite infection or buildup.

Yeah we figured the orange stuff was the carrots. I was mostly concerned about the darker part, the fact that it is really runny and it smells.

I am actually in the process of taking out the pellets for that exact reason you stated! Its a pain to clean as well.

I have no clue of the actual age. He is about 17" long. Dunno if that is any indication. I have him about 3 months and when i got him he was really skinny, he seems to have put on a bit more weight though since then.

As for feeding crickets, I was under the impression that you can raise a BD on a strickly green diet. And as i stated they get crickets 2 times a wekk mostly. Ill try and bump it up a bit and see how the fecies turns out.

Oh and my temps are good. 103 - 108

Im calling today about a fecal to get prices.
