Breeding and Old Age...

a2zgraphix Feb 08, 2004 02:58 PM

At what age do female bearded dragons stop breeding or at what age does their clutch sizes begin to become reduced in number of eggs laid & numbers of fertile eggs. The reason I ask is that I have the chance to purchase an awesome 3yr old female but I am looking for a female for breeding is she too old? How long can I breed her without cause harm to her? Thanks for any and all help!!

I agree with the answer you already got.

18 months is a good starting age and females should be retired by 6 years. 2 1/2 - 4 years seems to be their "prime" breeding time.

Hope this helps

I am no expert on breeding bearded dragons but my guess would be to stop breeding her when she is 5-6 years old, if her health doens't deteriorate at all and she is very healthy to begin with. 18 months is often consider the best time to start breeding and being 3 years old, she certainly is old enough but I wouldn't breed her more than two, maybe three more years.

The more experienced and professional breeders out there may have more to add than I can.
