is sand a good bottom for my snake?

pray4peace Feb 08, 2004 03:51 PM

my geckos seem to do ok on it so I thought it would be ok. I know it makes it easy to clean! Plus I can half bury his water bowl so he cant spill it.

I guess that sand is not a good substrate for BPs because it can get stuck in their "heat pits" on their faces. These are the organs used for detecting heat (and thus prey) and if sand were to lodge in there, only bad things could result. Newspaper is best substrate, hands down.

i've been using medium sized sand for 2 years now and everything is OK!if sand has small stones big enough, there will be no problem!
newspaper is ql, but i fu look from the other side...what about in nature...do they have newspaper as well?i think it's more nature-like for them to have real substrate!
that is just my opinion, it's not expert statement!!

snakes have ticks, predators, bad weather and lots of other things in nature that we dont provide to them. we shouldnt provide sand for them either. newspaper is the way to go.

SAND Doesn't dissolve in a PH of 1 or a PH of 14! A herps stomach is on average a PH 3 and their intestines a PH 9

Sand boas can and HAVE been impacted by SAND, and a sand swimming snake that sounds cool but how many people have captive sand swimming snakes? And a sidewinder i doubt someone who is asking about if sand is a good substrate for ball pythons would have a sidewinder.

i agree, but waht about shedding...sand helps them shed (after all they need rough surface to help him shed)
i haven't experienced any problems since now and i have had my BP for 2,5 year!
and i forgot to mention...i also add some turf, why it keeps humidity high!

Sand is the worst substrate ever next to thumb tacs. It is not easy to clean and it makes a mess everywhere else. Newspaper is by far the best substrate you can get.
