Is it to late to find true Hogg Island Boas?

jdmartin Feb 08, 2004 05:29 PM

I know it is not the season for hatchlings, but in my search to line up some reputable breeders I have seen some disturbing things/websites. I’m no purity NAZI, but why in the hell are people trying to cross Hoggs with Colombian and other BCI? IMHO there are more than enough hypo/pastel/salmon/red/fine line/snow/ghost/etc BCI to please even the most discriminating taste. Why can’t we leave the normally hardy, beautiful, smallish, and NEARLY EXTINCT Hoggs alone. These guys are the answer for so many of us enthusiest that it just kills me to see this stuff being purposefully experimented with for nothing more then the hope of making another buck or two. I know there are a lot of natural integrations of boas throughout CA, but one of the few truly unique natural morphs is being treated like just one more opportunity to cash in by some of the people I had thought were in this for different reasons. I guess it is either a bad night surfing or an overdue awakening on my part. Sorry for the venting guys/gals. Please disregard if I offend.

Money isn’t everything.

Rio Bravo Reptiles specializes in locality pure boa constrictors.
No"morphs", no hybrids, just an awesome selection of locality boas, including Hog Isle. There are probably others that I don't know about, but Gus at Rio Bravo has some of the nicest I've seen.
All the best,
Perry

remember Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther movie series?

To me the bigger question is how much Hogg Island blood is in
the "hypo/pastel/salmon/red/fine line/snow/ghost/etc" morphs
already. Or Cloud Boas, or the other rare endangered boas.

That pretty pink color that Hogs have is a very desirable
Phenotype.
(Or is it a Genotype?? Question for the cross-breeders)...

Thanks,
tc

And no it is not too late, Rio Bravo Reptiles produces pures still as mentioned above. Kevin hanley produces a few. And Jeff Ronne produces IMO the nicest, purest hoggs available. They come directly from Bob Sears stock. This is my male I got from Jeff. He is 2 yrs old and under 4 ft. He is about as big around as a fifty cent piece. I have bought another Sears line female that was produced by another person for him.
