Box Turtle Pregnant?

Pats1amy Feb 08, 2004 05:39 PM

I took two Ornate Box Turtles to help out a friend who was moving (ooops). There is a male and a female. They were both behaving relatively "normally" in term of eating and activity, however the female has completely changed over the last 1 1/2 weeks. Initially, all she did was sit in the water (for about 8 hours at a time) and not eat a thing. I contacted someone who believed she was positively gravid and suggested that I move her into a separate container. So, I put her in a 60 gallon rubbermaid tub with potting soil so she could dig(sorry folks, but winter in Rhode Island would not be the optimal time to find anything else) and put some other bark substrate from the pet store. I have regulated temp, I have misted, I have done everyting I have been told to do, but still no eating, minimal activity, and sitting as funny as possible at times with back legs completely streched out and front legs forward. She will not allow me to palpate her to see if I can feel eggs as well. She has only dug a hole once, but no eggs. This is driving me CRAZY, and I really don't know what else to do. I was assured that caring for them would be EASY, but my three dogs are far easier. Can anyone suggest anything (like "I'll take them off your hands" will do).
Thanks so much,
Amy

Hi Carrie,

I live in Rhode Island, and it's so small that city is irrelevant at this time. I think your offer is FANTASTIC, and can only hope that you happen to live on the east coast. I just finished an application for placement through an online rescue, but I have no idea how long they take to respond. If you want to contact me directly, I am "Pats1amy@aol.com"

Thanks,
Amy
