Rack Setup Question

zues Jun 08, 2003 12:14 PM

I just order my first rack and have some questions about setting it up. The rack will use Rubbermaid size 2221 tubs. It will be used for sub adults between 300 to 900 grams. In cages I have a warm hide and a cool hide and a water bowl large enough for the snake to soak in. My concren is that if I do this in the rack it will not leave a lot of floor space. If anybody could post a pic of your setup that would be great. The rack is 17 inches wide and 24 inches deep so the back will be dark. Is it ok to not have a hide. Thanks for any info. Clay

I would not worry about hides unless these are recently acquired snakes who may need the extra comfort of a hide. Personally I don't use any hides for healthy eating snakes, and I find that the racks are dark enough in the back to be good hides. I also do not use a bowl big enough to soak in. This will cause many problems in a rack system due to high humidity. I use ceramic dishes with plastic inserts that are about 6 inches in diameter. I tried larger, but really did not like the results. I have not had a bad shed in these conditions, because even this small water bowl will provide the proper humidity in a rack system with a closed top. Now Freedom Breeders might be a differant story. Hope that helps, Jason
