Distilled vs Filtered vs Rain

antonm Feb 08, 2004 09:13 PM

Ok can somebody settle this for me please. Which water is best for geckos to drink. I know for humans, distilled is bad simply because it has no minerals in it whatsoever. I'm wondering what kind of water the raindrops are composed of that geckos drink. The reason I ask is, I wanted to spray with distilled because it leaves no mineral stains on the glass but was just concerned about my lizard's health.

I use distilled. The mineral stains left on the glass are mostly calcium carbonate, magnesium, maybe some iron manganese oxide if you have rusty pipes. Your herp should be getting all the minerals it needs from its (dusted) food anyway.

Heathwise, distilled may not be the best for the same reason it is not the best for us. All vertebrates need essential minerals, and many of those may come in the tap water. Hard water stains are just an unfortunate thing we have to deal with. Just make it part of your cleaning routine. I would stay away from rain water as there may be poisons/toxins in rain water.
