I occasionally use paper towels for young snakes because they are easy to clean and can not be ingested (which is a plus for finicky babies that will only eat after you leave the mouse in with them). Other than that, I generally use aspen as most snakes will burrow in it and therefore it doubles as a hide.

I use both!! Since I gave up aspen years ago....my cages are cleaner, and there is not " snake room " smell. Paper towels for the young ones and newspaper for the bigger ones. Maintaining cleanliness has never been so easy!

Yep- tried aspen years ago and hated having to sift through it. I never felt it was really clean unless I dumped it once a week. I was also keeping fish eating snakes at the time that usually dragged their meals through the shavings so I was always worried about impaction. Paper is easy, fast, clean and cheap.

never use them. I (depending upon the moisture requirements of the species kept) use Aspen, Cypress mulch or spagnum moss. my sidewinder and horned vipers live on sand.
