Community VEIL CHAMELEON ENCLOSURES

cajun Feb 08, 2004 11:25 PM

I have been researching on internet and books that i have on keeping veils... and on the most part there is a little conflict of opinions on keeping community enclosures.... Most of them state--- ONE CAGE, ONE ENCLOSURE.... but a few breeders and references state that it can be DONE...
I have a 10 inch male that i keep in his own cage.. and in a 100gallon reptarium, i have three veils.. one 5 inch, one 7 inch and one 9.5 inch. They seem to be doing okay.. eating good, looking good, etc. I have it well decorated with plenty of coleus vines, tree limbs, pothos ivy, water fountain, etc... i really lot of stuff... Can i introduce my male to this enclosure or am i asking for trouble... its still cold outside, for now (40 to 50 degrees at nite)... as soon as it stays warm in the spring, i plan on getting a 260 gallon to keep them outside (louisiana).. I will accept all opinions.. good or bad...
thanks ofr the help... and have a good day....

The three veils in the 65g are females

From what im aware, Veileds are not social animals, they need their own space. Even if they all seem ok together, the can be very easily stressed and could cause serious problems. They may not even show the stress until its too late. I personally would not take the risk of housing any veileds together over 3 months of age, males or females unless in a breeding period, but even then i wouldnt allow them for more then short periouds.

Veileds are one of the most territorial of chams. When keepers talk about a community they are talking about housing a group in a full sized greenhouse, not cages. No cage indoors would probably be big enough, so unless you are planning to build an outdoor greenhouse with larger planted shrubs I would not do it.
