Housing Opinions

Hi!

I have a 6 month old creamsicle corn that's housed in a 10 gallon tank, and I feel its time to start loooking for her permanent house.

I do not want to use another aquarium, we have a lot of cats and they are always trying to sit on top of the screen. I ended up keeping her (Sidney) in a separate room with the door closed. I want something that I don't have to worry about with the cats sitting on top, looking down and freaking out Sidney, the cage shoud also looks nice.

I was thinking of either a Vision cage (model 211 -- 24"Wx22"Dx14"H) or a Boaphile cage (model 123D -- 24"Wx24"Dx17.5"H, which includes a shelf). Does anyone have any experience with either cage? What do you like about them/dislike about them?

Thanks for your opinions.

unfortunately I don't have either cage you mentioned, but I totally understand the cat issue. If I could afford one for each of my snakes, and had the room to put a bunch of big cages, I would definately have a bunch of Boaphile cages. Though I do think they're a little over-priced.

for small corns. They must have sliding doors with a bit of a gap, because 2 people (that I know of) had small corns escape that way. So be sure your corn is too big to fit through any gaps of any cage that was probably designed for an adult snake.

Kathy mentioned Vision cages being insecure, but Neodeshas can have escape routes as well (if you can even find a Neodesha anymore). A friend had a young kingsnake escape through a Neodesha's sliding glass doors.

You might want to check out Moonstruck Caging. I don't think they have a website, but I've seen their stuff in the Caging Classifieds. Their cages seem to be just like Boaphiles but they are cheaper and the reviews I have heard about them are good too. If I had enough money to buy a Boaphile cage, I'd buy a Moonstruck cage instead.

The Vision 211 is a great cage, but the snake should be 2 years old before going in or else you'll need to lessen the gap between the glass bypass doors.

IMO Boaphile cages are great for boas/pythons, and they are made for that application. I think it is overkill for a cornsnake.

So what do you do? ... www.herpcages.com ... Ask for the solid-top 36x12x12. Great little cage, big enough for a corn, extremely attractive, full visibility and access, easy to heat, etc etc. Or the 20x20x20 if you want height. Put in a nice branch, etc.
