Specific questions to begin breeding...

pspguy Feb 09, 2004 10:06 AM

Okay, I believe the time is here. My male and female have begun feeding again after a 2 month cooling period. Here are the things I want to know:

1). How long do I leave the first female in the tank with my male?

2). How long should I wait before putting my male with the next female??

3). Most imporantly, since I keep my females in a 90 gallon enclosure how will I know who lays which eggs? (LOL)

4). How long after being housed with my male should I expect to see signs of the female being gravid?

5). How long after that (roughly) will it be before she deposits eggs?

Ok, this should get you all started =)

1). How long do I leave the first female in the tank with my male? ...

the male should be put into the females tank, he'll rattle his tail to determine wether or not shes a female, then he'll start walking towards her and nipping at her neck or tail, keep a close watch on that

2). How long should I wait before putting my male with the next female??

if i am not mistaken..a male can inpregnate up to 10 females at one sitting, i am not sure of this though.

3). Most imporantly, since I keep my females in a 90 gallon enclosure how will I know who lays which eggs? (LOL)

keep a close watch for digging, digging is the sign to look for once she's about to lay, you can mark the eggs with the name of the leo

4). How long after being housed with my male should I expect to see signs of the female being gravid?

it usually takes 2-3 weeks for the eggs to become fully visable

5). How long after that (roughly) will it be before she deposits eggs?

usually it takes 3-4 weeks for her to lay in some cases 5 weeks, just remember to supplement her with as much calcium as you can

hope this helps

Well it helps except for the fact that I'm worried about putting the male into my females tank. Some of the females I don't think are in breeding shape yet. Would it hurt or bother anything to move the female to the males??

i dont think it would hurt them, i was just thinking of the normal way, you can put the females in with the male with mostly the same effect as putting the male in with them

LMAO HAHA, glad to help a fellow leo keeper
it would usually take the male about..10 mins to breed, i would just leave him in there until after he breeds with her...

Would be to build a rack system and house all of them separately..... This will help the confusion of who layed what egg...... A guy named Rob Jenkins posted plans for a pretty nice and inexpensive rack system...... I am building one this weekend to maximize my space in the reptile room and to make things look neater....... Also when you house your leos separately they tend to grow faster and better and the colors seem to be much brighter...... You can also keep a close eye on things like feeding and how much they eat...... Oh and rubbermaids are very easy to clean....... What more can you ask for?????LOL..... Good luck with the breeding season......
