What to do with crickets when cleaning out cage?

r6guy905 Feb 09, 2004 10:22 AM

I want to clean out my cricket cage, but I have no idea where to keep the crickets while I do it. I was thinking to just dump them in the bathtub (empty of course), but I thought they might jump out and I would be chasing crickets around my house the rest of the day. I also thought about a cardboard box, but I am not sure if I have any. I could use any suggestions that you guys might have. Thanks.

I had a few different tubs for crickets that I would circulate. When I got a new batch of crickets, I would dump them in a new tub. As soon as a tub was completely fed off, I would clean it.

I couldn't fathom moving the crickets to clean their tub.

If you keep egg cartons or paper towel roll cores in the container you could coax the crix into them, just pick up the tubes and tranfer them into a bucket or a large glass jar. Easiest thing is to keep another container and just switch from one to the other. A tip: move slowly and fewer of them will jump around.

To be honest, it sounds like you have too many crickets in the cham cage. I recommed getting a plastic tub and storing the crix inthere. Then, at feeding time, give just as many crickets as your cham can handle. This way, when it comes cleaning time, you don't have any excess crickets. If you do have one or two hanging around, throw them in the cricket tub.

Be careful about leaving crickets in a cham cage uneaten. They tend to nibble on chams, especially when they are sleeping. This is very dangerous and could result in tragic consequences. They will also make the cham cage smelly!

Good luck~

Oh, I didn't even think you were talking about cleaning the CHAM cage! Yes, definitely get those extra crix out of there! Crix loose in the cham cage also lose their gutload fairly quickly and when hungry will eat feces and other nasty stuff from the cage bottom. You don't want your cham eating all that.

No, I wasn't talking about the Cham cage, just the cricket cage. I just decided to transfer the crickets to a bigger RubberMaid container, so it's all good now. Thanks.
