Gravid female or just fat

Scubaqueen Feb 09, 2004 10:33 AM

I have a female dragon that is only about 5 months old, but she's suddenly gotten rather fat (she's also quite the pig too). Anyhow, I'm having a hard time telling if she is in fact gravid or just fat. I've tried holding her and feeling of her stomach, but she's rather timid and doesn't like being held. If anyone can help, that would be great.

Is she housed in with a male? If not, then it isn't likely she is gravid. If she is with a male, there is a small chance but at that age, it is usually still too young, however, if she remains housed with a male, it is only a matter of time before she does become gravid.

To find out for sure if she is gravid, you can take her to a vet for x-rays which may be able to detect eggs, but typically only near the end of gestation. Another way is to just wait for a few more weeks and see if she starts to do alot of digging and clawing as she tries to find a good place to lay eggs. If you do see this behaviour, put her into an egg laying box.
