Splinting A Leo??

ChuUtena Feb 09, 2004 02:30 PM

Has anyone ever tried to put a splint on a leo? Here is the reason. The sick leo I have (I've posted about her before, she was dumped off at my store) has one of her arms bent backwards due to a calcium deficiency. Now when I got her about 2 weeks ago her arms were rubber. Now they are hardening up, and I'm afraid her arm will stay bent backward forever which would mean she will never be able to eat on her own due to her mobility issues. So while her bones are still not 100% formed, what are the odds I could put a split on her arm so it would form correctly? I've done so much for her already, but none of it will matter if she will still be so deformed she can't eat. Please give me some help.

I have done that before i had a leo you see and it fell off of its climbing log and broke its leg so i tried a splint cus i figured it would die either way i did that then supplemented its food for about 2 months and it wasnt good as new but it was usable anyways this was an adult and it was a tamed adult leo so i dont know u would be able to get it on.
i made mine out of popsicle sticks, glue, old cloths, and rubber bands. good luck

Hi

I have a wild idea for you. Go get a piece of aquarium fish tubing that would be a good size for her leg and then slice it from top to bottom on one side, then peel it back and wrap it around the geckos leg. That way you could easily take it off every know and then to let the leg breath and you could exercise it a little. You would have to melt or cut off any rough edges. Also maybe with tweezers you could put a little gauze inside or not.

Idea two is to call your vet. on the phone and see if they can give you any idea's without having to bring her in.

Idea three is to use gauze and get her leg in the position you want it in and then put on a thick enough layer so it will stay in that position, changing it know and then to let it air out and for you to exercise it.

Well your wild idea worked!! Nothing else would work because her arm was so badly deformed. I used to tubing around the arm, and then taped it shut. Without the tape she just rubbed it off, but with the tape it's perfect. Thank you so much for your idea!!!
