shedding before laying question...

thegeckobarn Feb 09, 2004 03:28 PM

I have heard of a "pre-lay" shed..but havent witnessed it many times, only a few. So I am unsure of how long after the shed to expect eggs. Is there a certain time frame for this, or just a shot in the dark?
I have an albino female that shed just last night, and she has been gravid a good 3-4 weeks now, if not more. No digging just yet.

Has anyone observed this pre-lay shed, and how long afterwards were your eggs laid?

Thanks,

Crystal Light

crystal,
in some of my geckos i have observed an almost pre lay shed... but its when i know for sure they are very gravid... you should be able to turn the gecko over and clearly see her eggs... if thats the case and she just shed its normall with in a week but let me tell you thats not set in stone LOL.... also i have some females that will dig several days in advance to laying and others that dig the night before so that depends... be patient!!!!! eggs shall come soon

LOL..females can be weird, cant they?
I know for sure she's gravid, but these are her first eggs, so probably infertile. But if they ARE fertile..they will be my FIRST albino babies!

I got eggs yesterday from my tangerine female...but they were infertile. Now im just waiting on 5 other leos to lay already..oy. Patience doesnt work for me well...lol.

But anyway, she shed, so I will wait and see how many days it takes for her to lay

PS: btw Robin..cant WAIT for me and Dusty to get those new leos from you on Thursday, but I wish you could be there so I could meet you this time, lol. Ah well, maybe next time

Good idea Robin! I didnt leave her with him long enough, I guess. Ive had her a little over a year, and she has only produced 2 fertile eggs...one baby hatched, and the other got killed by my son (my fault) b/c when I was candling them, I didnt realize he grabbed one, and squished it . Im now more careful and dont let him near any of the eggs.

But anyway, hes going back in with her now! Thanks for that info!

My first time gecko shed before she laid eggs, then laid them 4 days apart, im guessing this is natural being her first time, and she was rather small.

Crystal,

My female laid her third clutch just recently. She held the eggs for just over a month. She laid two eggs January 1st. Then, she was noticably gravid, shed, and laid her second clutch on Febuary 7th. Hope that helps, lol.

Just because --- lol ----

I tried to put my male in with my female because only like 1/3 of her clutches have been fertile (as expected since she's a first time breeder), but she wasn't having it. So I had to save my 90 gram male from the 62 gram she-devil and put him back in his own tank, lol.
