I am interested in finding any leucistic specimens of the genus Heterodon, but would specifically like to find leucistic Heterodon platyrhinos. I can usually find just about any species/mutation, but these guys are eluding me. Maybe nobody is breeding them.
They have a pair they confiscated from a friend of mine. According to them, the founding animal was caught illegally in Colorado. Which makes all the offspring illegal. He was under the impression that the original animal was caught legally in New Mexico. It cost him 24K (for the snakes) plus legal expenses & they are trying to convict him w/ violations of the Lacey Act. If anyone offers you animals from that bloodline, I would decline. Wouldn't surprise me if they would sell them to someone and then bust them for buying them. Seems to be a common occurence.....sad.
More Fish and Wildlife shananigans.....if they are in the hands of a government agency they will probably never see the light of day in the market.... it's a shame
Hopefully you are not referring to nvenom8 (didn't say his real name fo a reason). Because those snakes were not caught in New mexico.
I think those were the only reported "leucistic" H. nasicus in captivity.
Seems like we can draw a parallel between the War on Drugs and the War on Herps...
I have seen some pics of leucistic hogs in the KS photo galleries....anybody know whos those are?
that my friend purchased or the animals that produced them.? I guess they are on display @ the Denver Zoo now.? Seems idiotic that it would be illegal to collect them - they are pure white w/ a BIG Blinking sign saying "Eat me" to all potential predators. More politics in action, someone who is all cozy w/ the Zoo will probably be able to get there hands on some w/out being harassed.
It is a stupid law and there are some people working to change legislation here. However, it is still illegal and anytime politicians can link illegal activity to our hobby it just makes things worse. So why doesn't everyone follow the laws, stupid or not, and use the system to change things. The laws have been in place way before all these genetic morphs have become popular. The law, as written, is now inappropriate but it is still a law. Just makes us all look bad when someone in Colorado gets caught illegally selling native species (leucisitc or not). Doesn't help much either that he was a covicted felon in possesion of illegal firearms.
It is absurd!! I know I would have never thought to call the AZ Division of Wildlife when I wanted to buy a freakin' WDB Rattlesnake - that are abundant & considered a nuisance from Texas to CA - from a guy in AZ. Same goes for the Hognose - especially since almost all states have an exemption for Albinos & Leucistics. Thank god the guy (in AZ) made the AZ code known to me or I could be looking at the same felony charge. It is ludacris!! I agree that people should follow the laws and work together to try to change them if they are just plain stupid but how are we supposed to know what is illegal in a state on the other side of N. America? And how can we change the law as a non-resident from a different state? I'm just so distraught about "The War on Herpers". Aren't there more important things out there our goverment should be concerned with?
