Weird Jackson's behavior

dr_octagon Feb 09, 2004 05:03 PM

i walked in today to check on my jax and i see my female hanging upside-down from a vine only held by her tail and one rear leg. i got kinda worried so i moved her gently to a safer perch. now everytime she is on the vine she grabs with 3 legs and leaves one stretched out. when i was spraying with water she started to run away as always but this time she started to reach around wildly and started to grab at vines that werent there. When climbing up the vine she started to grab her belly like she couldnt tell the differance between herself and the vine. my first thoughts were she had somehow gone blind and could not see what she was grabing at. so i got my male jax out and held him out near her and she puffed up and extended her throat so i dont think she is blind....what else could this be. she would not eat today either

The grabbing behaivor sounds to me like she is trying to defend her territory from an intruder. She may not be showing stress colors while you are spraying, but it looks like she is getting stressed anyway.

Sometimes chams do this. Doesn't sound like anything is wrong. As long as her grip is strong and she recovers herself after you leave her alone she is fine. Remember, in a typical cage a cham that falls can't really hurt itself, so dangling or hanging is not a big problem. They do stretch and rest a leg just like we might.
