Update on uro's with pneumonia and ? about amoxicillin...

veronicag Feb 09, 2004 05:40 PM

Houdini and Maya (Saharan Uro's) aren't any better after a 3 week long ordeal with Baytril. The vet is stumped and I think I'm going to have to have a culture done. But results from the culture could take days, even weeks to get back. Someone once recommended giving them Amoxicillin. Has anyone had any experience, good or bad, with this drug. I know it has very few side effects and I have some just sitting in my fridge. I just don't know what else to do at this point. Doug Dix, the breeder I bought them from, is willing to look at them in 2 1/2 weeks when he's in town for a local reptile expo. But I don't know if I can wait that long. Doug said to definately get them off the Baytril, because if it hasn't worked in 2 weeks, it's not going to work at all.

Thanks!

Entirely different drug. I would really recommend a culture. You should have preliminary results in a couple of days, and if it is already known that it is not responsive to Baytril you are dealing with a nasty bug. I would want to make sure you were treating appropriately. It may take a combination of drugs. You can certainly start on the Amikacin once you have taken samples for culture, but I highly rec. the culture and sensitivity.

A note on Amikacin, it is an amnioglycoside antibiotic and can potentially be very hard on the kidneys, so it is extra important to make sure they stay very well hydrated to protect the kidneys. Also to make any antibiotic effective in reptiles you want to make sure the temperatures remain at the high end of the optimum range. Just my two cents.

I can get a culture done on Monday of next week. The uro's have been on Clavamox for two days now. I'm anxious to see if there is any improvement soon. I'll keep you updated and I'll look into the drug you mentioned.

Thanks!

Your little guys have pneumonia? Horrible! I really hope they get better Veronica. Sorry, I have not had any experience with that antibiotic for reptiles. Keep us updated.

As of this morning they both looked a little more lively and energetic. I'm on day four of Clavamox meds and I'm hoping that they will continue to improve. Both are off food and I have to give them Critical Care with Pedialyte everyday. I'll be getting a culture done on them early next week, as that's when the doc returns. I'll keep you posted.
