bird cage?

dragon55 Feb 09, 2004 05:44 PM

I just set up a new enclosure using a bird cage. I couldn't help but wonder why this isn't suggested more often as a cheaper solution to housing a chameleon. It has all the features of a more expensive screen cage. You can even let the drip system drain into the plastic bottom and slide the whole thing out, making cleaning less stressful on the chameleon. Am I wrong to think that this is the perfect low cost solution?

Only drawbacks i see is that the bars are made of steel and will eventually rust...i have a birdcage in my de-tached garage that will attest to that ...and insects will simply walk out.

I have wondered about this too. I have a Stainless Steel Cage I am considering using for outdoor enclosure. It is Zoo quality, doesn't rust, and has all those previously mentioned benefits. That one drawback is the insect escapes problem that I haven't figured out. So I guess I have to teach my Cham to feed from a dish for those insects that jump or run away, and the Stainless Steel is VERY expensive, but durable; but yes, the format of the cage is seemingly more suited. I think people didn't use them mostly cause of the excaping insects, and lack of PVC coated wires. They do make PVC coated wires in other reptile cages such as iguna cages. Maggie
