The situation where pledged donors where recognized by name had the unfortunate (and I suspect unintended) consequence of putting pressure on potential donors. The decision to donate or not to any particular cause is a personal one. Also, I don't think the idea of a pledge drive to raise reward money came from the person who's snakes where stolen. Sure, in hind sight it might have been better for him to have purchased one less high end snake and have used that money for a security system rather than relying on secrecy for security.
I don't follow your logic as to why potential buyers should resent someone who is working to provide them with a product? If the price is too high you don't have to buy. However, those that do buy at high prices provide incentive for breeders to work hard at producing more and that hard work will result in the most snakes being available as soon as possible. Until there are enough to go around the limited availability will be rationed by high prices.
