UPS won't ship a tortoise?

sned25271 Feb 09, 2004 09:19 PM

Hi,

I was supposed to ship a Russian tortoise baby today via UPS Next Day Air. I have shipped 3 in the past, but this time the clerk went and got the manager and he told me no live animals. This probably wouldn't have happened if they didn't ask what is in the box. The box was labeled "Keep From Extreme Temps" and there were no air holes since it is cold out. I don't want to lie about what is in the box. What should I do and what other options do I have?

Well first off UPS will only ship Live harmless Reptiles if you are an approved shipper of them through the UPS main Office. You might have been able to ship before without a problem but obviously now your office is going to require that you be approved. Second it is a Violation of the Lacey Act if the box is not properly labeled. The box must be labeled with "Live Harmless Reptiles" the box must also have clearly on it the scientific and common name of the species being shipped and the quantity.
Now you can ship Tortoises through Airborne without an account but the box must me marked legally through all carriers.
