Angolan Python Behaviors

Doug T Feb 09, 2004 09:46 PM

I thought I'd pass on some interesting stuff.

I have some Angolan pythons, all 3 are good feeders. Recently there was one who hadn't been fed. I've been noticing that when he hears me banging around the snake room, cleaning cages and such, he comes out of his hide box looking for food. I've never noticed any of my snakes doing this before quite like he does.

The other 2 angolans I have are more aggressive feeders, but are content to wait for food to come to the hidebox. This guy comes out for his meals.

Just some unusual 'learned' behavior.

Doug,
I have a female ball python that once i bring the mice/rats in my room she instantly leaes here hide and start cruising the cage anticipating the meal. Only snake i have that in turn actively hunts for her prey. I guess she learns that me and a rustling bag means food, or she can smell the food really quickly.

Doug,

I have a White Lipped Python that does the same thing. In fact as soon as he sees me near he follows me (in his cage) as I move about the room. If I try to open the door he is right there. Sometimes I slowly move my hand at the other door to get him there so I can open the first door to put his meal in.

How are the Mussurana's. I hope you are successful with breeding them and will have some offspring soon. I need some.

Hi Robert,

The mussuranas have at least 1 more year of growth needed, maybe 2.

I'll do as best I can.

Doug,

I figured they were a bit young now, but I have much patience. Keep me posted. I have been trying to contact David Fabius regarding some imports but haven't heard anything yet. One day.

Not to be nosey but.....were did you get those the only place ive seen those are Lazik and he wants 5 G's for a pair. Also as far as behavior are they more like a ball or a blood?? Im actively searching for a pair and was wondering your overall imporession of this species, appreciate a response... THANKS

It's not nosey asking where someone got a snake so it's cool.

Casey Lazik lives about 30 minutes from my house, all of which are pleasant miles on country highways. I went to his place and purchased the trio. He has quite a few adults so I was able to pick my favorite 3 unrelated animals.

Angolans are pricey snakes for sure but also will come down in price over the years. I've had some luck breeding other species and I normally just put money made from selling babies towards buying other snakes I want. That's how I got the Angolans... and most everything else I have.

Hope this helps.

You asked if they are more like Ball or Blood Pythons. I don't know, I've never kept either.

Adult Angolans get bigger than Ball Pythons and I'd say they're a bit more "spirited" than any BP I've seen.

My jungles and bredli do the same. They think it is always feeding time. The ball pythons are a bit more reclusive. I'd like to get some angolans someday, they are neat snakes.
