Hiding box - oak safe?

macsux Jun 08, 2003 02:20 PM

I'm building a new hiding box for my ball python. I'm trying to figure out which is the safest wood to use. Cedar and pine are out of the question, so I wanted to ask if oak is safe...

Most hardwoods are fine, such as Oak, Maple, Cherry etc.

A pine box would be fine. Pine is not nearly as bad as ceder, some people have used pine shavings for 10 years without any apparent effects, while others have not been so lucky. I have never heard anyone complain of problems from a cage made from pine plywood. A coat of sealent should be enough to keep any possible pine oils away from the snake.

Plastic is even better - easier to clean and does not harbor parasites like unprotected wood.
