What kinda China do you serve your Superworms on?

shopaholic Feb 10, 2004 02:28 AM

Hi folks: well, an opaque margerine tub will not do for my Cham while serving Superworms. He's not going near it. Would you tell me what your China pattern(Glad, Deli, Rubbermaid, ect.) is for serving Entree Superworms or other non-branch gripping insects. The Superworms scared me a little with their ability to back up and I'd like to pick them up with chopsticks and place them into something they can't excape from so that I don't accidentally touch one while wiping down the floor of the cage. I just might have a panick attack if that happened. thank you-Maggie

Try anything completely clear. Or set it on the bottom and watch him eat it. All of my chams will go straite down and eat their worms, they dont let them sit in the cages.

I use a CDR spindle lid from a 25 pack (or possibly a 50 pack). its about 2-3 inches deep.

My cham had trouble with it being clear so i taped it with duck tape. grey outside/white inside. PERFECT!

Maggie,
Ha ha ha chopsticks huh? For some reason, superworms never made me nervous to grab.... I am much more nervous about roaches lol. The best way (at least for me) to serve superworms is to stick them on the screen side, where the chameleon can see them. They will almost always climb uphill since their body falls down and they want to go forward. The chameleon will get them off the screen wall. If you're going to do it from a plate use a big flat plate or dish with short sides, and put it on the floor. Then the chameleon doesn't realize that the worm is in a bowl or container and eats normally. If you can maneuver them on to the screen side from chopsticks, that may even be a better way. Or just take a deep breath, swallow your pride, GRAB ONE and put it on the screen yourself (you can always wash your hands after). I think you could feed them one at a time by hand faster than trying to pick them up with chopsticks and get them into a bowl/plate. Maybe even find some rubber gloves and take it a step at a time. Good luck!

Hi Tyler: We Chinese pride ourselves in being able to catch a fly in midair with chopsticks! . It was actually quite easier and faster then taking a deep breath for me. I tell ya, somethings wrong with me... i can spar a 250 lb. guy and flip him(I'm only 108 lbs), but a mere wiggly Superworm will have me looking for Benedryl to calm my itching skin!!! I will try the on the screen method. I have the worms now in a low dish on the floor or the bottom of the pot and the Cham gapes at them! Is he scared of them? He ate the one Silkworm I put in as an appetizer, but no go on the Supers. Does he just not like them?

Thanks Tyler, Maggie

P.S Hey did the FF culture work at all for getting regular flies to culure?

Maggie,
Oh ok, I didn't know you had mastered the skill of the chop sticks. In that case, you're probably ready for roaches then. I don't know why he would gape at it unless it was just scaring him to have something weird in the cage. My chameleons love superworms and eat them non stop if I kept offering them. I do it 100% on the screen sides. The housefly in the fruit fly container experiment was an official failure. I had eggs and maggots and they all died. Some of the flies lasted about 10 days and others died right away, so I know some of them were eating and living on the medium. Oh well. Thought I'd give it a shot while I had them. Good luck with your supers.

Hey Tyler: well it worked just as you said it would I put the Supers on the screen and yes my cham just either looked at them or gaped at them. Then, after one day he started to eat them! I'm so relieved! Only thing that was very scarey was the "CRUNCH! CRUNCH! CRUNCH!" Yiaks! that noise was gross! No, I don't think I'm ready for the cockroaches-chopsticks or not! Thanks Tyler!
