Snakes swimming to keep cool

ozmotorsport Feb 10, 2004 04:56 AM

Anyone who lives here in Aus would know that at the moment it's damn hot. SO hot in fact that I'm having trouble keeping the temp inside my snake box down to an acceptable level.

I read somewhere the other day that to give your snake some relief from the heat fill a bucket or bowl with a couple of inches of cold water and put the snake in it. Anyone do this? He already has a large water bowl in his box but I have only ever seen him in it once.

I got a new digi camera thsi week and have been playing with the setting. Took this pic.

A few of my cooler weather colubrids soak of their own volition when the temperature gets too high for them (my a/c doesn't work so well sometimes and they get put out if the temp gets above 85). If it were me I'd put a nice big bowl of cool water in the snake's tank and let them choose whether or not to swim.

"The serpent crams itself with animal life that is often warm and vibrant, to prolong an existence in which we detect no joy and no emotion. It reveals the depth to which evolution can sink when it takes the downward path and strips animals to the irreducible minimum able to perpetuate a predatory life in its naked horror."

I don't know that I would do that. you may put the bucket in the cage with the snake, but to throw your snake in may not be the best idea. Give your snake the choice and let it choose if it wants to cool off in that way.
