replacing UTHs; how often?

I was looking at pics in the gallery, and someone posted a burnt snake cage, burned by a faulty under-tank heater. I have had my present ones (zoomeds, plugged into a thermostat attached) for over a year now. They are emitting heat fine. Not to be paranoid, but how often should they be replaced?
