I did it! I finally got some pics of Ra's underside...

Sunfox Feb 10, 2004 08:47 AM

although I had to do it when he was still half-asleep so he'd sit still. The only modification I made to this pic (other than crop it) was increase the brightness and contrast.

So what do you guys think, male or female?

I lifted his tail and took a pic. No modification except cropping.

Poor Ra!

Well, I'd say that he looks like the mali I have, which I believe is the male. But best to wait for more experienced keepers' opinions too!

Good luck!
Nicki

That's why I wanted to get it right the first time. I always give him treats whenever I do something he may not like but is necessary. (That's why he doesn't mind the monthly weigh-ins anymore ) I never hold him tight, a loose grip is all he needs.
I'm really hoping he's male

Thanks for your opinion

At first glance it looks like a male. The femoral pores appear that way in the photo. However, there is a tendency in Malis to have female mimics. The only sure way to find out is to have an expert probe for hemipenis(I think?)

Now that the breeding season is coming up this spring i would look for breeding season behaviors, if he spins in circles to mark his territory it is a male. And the easiest way to sex them without all the risks involved in probing is to life up the tail les then 90 degrees up into the air. You have a pic of you somewhat doing it, it wouldn't hurt him/her if you lifted his/her tail a little higher. Two bulges= male, 1 bulge= female. The females have one large bulge in the middle, and the males have two smaller bulges with a depression between them. I would look up sexing bearded dragons, and see what a male's and females underside look like. It is a lot easier to sex them when you are there because you can move the tail around until you see what you are looking for. Also, if wax starts coming out of its pores you got a male. Good luck with sexing Ra.

Uromastyx Pics

Before undergoing brumation, Ra has done these "circle dances" before. He is only 1 1/2 years old so I don't think he'll exhibit any major breeding behaviour. Do females perform "circle dances" as well? If not, then I have a male for sure. He also likes to stand tall on his pagoda rock with his head held up high. He kind of looks like a cobra in striking position when he does this. I was told that this was a form of territorial display. So what do you think, based on these observations, is he a male or a female?
Thanks for the help and the advice about the tail. I'll take a better look next time. I think he's getting pretty fed up with me looking at his "parts"

In the pic, it looks just like my female. It definatly has the coloration of a female, but it is very rare for females to do the "circle dances" because males usually do this to mark their territory. When they spin in circles they excrete wax out of the pores onto the rocks or whatever they are spinning on, so basically they are claiming what they are spinning on theirs and that it is part of their territory. My guys do the posture thing you described all the time. I guess they always try to look big so in the wild a preditor desn't make a snack out of them. I would say male, but when after seeing that pic i am stumped, now i think you might have a female. The only way to be sure it is a male is to wait. If i had to take a guess, i would say female, because it looks like it is almost full grown, and Ra has the exact color of a normal female/ Also, RA doesn't have a lot of yellow on it's back and isn't show any jet black color. Ra acts like a boy, but i think Ra is a girl. This is just an educated guess so dont change the name or anything. So you could wait for Ra to start turning yellow and black, or wait for Ra to lay a clutch of eggs. So you could find out what Ra is within a few months. But if Ra doesn't start becoming black by next year then you probably have a female.

Uromastyx Pics

Sunfox Feb 11, 2004 09:51 PM

but everyone else who answered my post said he is male. I'm leaning more towards male because he gets quite dark when he's cool. The pics you've seen are when he's warmed up. By the pattern of coloration on his back, I'm guessing he may be either a herringbone or voodoo morph.

Thanks for your help
