San Mateo County Salamanders

biggdady9 Jun 08, 2003 03:03 PM

I am not new to herpatology growing up in the Mojave but I am new to actually going out and trying to find the things. Does anyone know of good times (winter I think?) and places to find salamanders and native frogs near Portola Valley/Palo Alto? How about Santa Cruz? Also, is there anything of interest in Los Trancos Creek?

Palo Alto is good for most species known in the area, but moisture may be an issue by this time of year. Try to work heavily shaded ravines.

It depends on what your lookin for, there were a few spots in the areas you mentioned where i found Aneides Lugubris, neotonic dicamptodons, taricha torosa and granulosa, and the most actively seen slender sal.If you go near forested areas with a creek, pond or see page your likely to find some of thee sals.

You'll find: ensatinas (ensatina), slender salamanders (batrachoseps), arboreal salamanders (aniedes), pacific giants (plethodon), black salamanders (aniedes sp.), rough-skinned/california newts (taricha), and the (federally protected) Santa Cruz long-toed salamanders. I've seen most in just the last few weeks, but the weather is drying out fast so fall is the best bet to see the full spectrum.
Good luck
