Need Help With Eye Problem

micky-kennie Feb 10, 2004 11:33 AM

My panther chameleons eye seems to always be closed. It is only one eye (the other apears normal.) He is eating now, so I'm not REALLY woried, but I know this is abnormal and I need to fix it. What can be causing this? He is about 4 months old, eats great, is hydrated, his temps are about 100 at basking spot and 75-80 ambient temps, lots of fake folige and some real plants(pathos), and is in a screen cage. I keep 2 sides covered with plastic to retain heat (its cold up here in Ohio right now!) Any ideas would be apreciated, and anyone that lives in the Dayton/cincinati/columbus area that knows of a GOOD herp vet would be aprecciated. I have some indeas of where to go, but nothing beats first hand experience. Thanks!

Eye problems can be due to injury, irritation, an early sign of slight dehydration, infection, or even nutritional problems. First, test for dehydration. Take a fold of belly skin between your fingers. Release it. If the skin stays folded for a few moments the cham is dehydrated. The skin should flatten out when it is released.

Check the eyelid itself. Is there any discharge? Try squirting sterile saline (contact lens solution) on the eye to help flush any debris away. If the cham will or can not open it you probably need a vet to take a look. I don't like suggesting putting any type of ointments or antibiotics in an eye without having a vet check the eye with a good scope first.
